A Day of Western Fun at the Fort Worth Stockyards

Jennifer Schorr, Travel Influencer

Welcome to the Fort Worth Stockyards, where the spirit of the Old West is alive and well. Here, history meets modern-day excitement, offering a unique blend of culture, entertainment, and Texan charm. Whether you’re a history buff, a shopping enthusiast, or just looking for a fun day out, the Stockyards have something for everyone. Follow me as I share the must-see attractions and hidden gems of this iconic Texas destination so you plan your next visit to have fun in Fort Worth.

Step into the Past with the Cattle Drive

Fort Worth cattle drive

A must-do on your adventure is witnessing one of the most iconic events at the Stockyards: the cattle drive! Twice daily, longhorn cattle are driven down Exchange Avenue, providing a glimpse into the area’s rich ranching history. As the cowhands lead the herd, you’ll feel transported back to the days when Fort Worth was a bustling hub for cattle trading. It’s a sight you won’t want to miss, so be sure to have your camera ready!

Before the cowhands begin leading the cattle down the street right in front of you, you’ll learn about the history of the cattle drive and why longhorns were chosen for this, including their resilience, adaptability, and ability to thrive on sparse vegetation. Their long legs and sturdy build made them well-suited for the grueling journeys, and they became a symbol of the rugged, independent spirit of Texas.

Experience the Thrill of the Rodeo

No visit to the Stockyards is complete without attending a rodeo. Held every Friday and Saturday night at the Cowtown Coliseum, the Stockyards Championship Rodeo is the world’s only year-round rodeo. Feel the adrenaline rush as cowboys and cowgirls compete in thrilling events like bull riding, barrel racing, and team roping. The energy is electric, and the excitement is palpable, making it an unforgettable experience for the whole family. There is a gift shop you can visit just before you enter the coliseum, and refreshments are available for purchase inside. Surprising us was the fact that the entire area inside is air conditioned, providing another enjoyable aspect to the evening.

Shop ‘Til You Drop

Throughout the day, take some time to explore the many unique shops, boutiques, bars and restaurants that line the streets of the Stockyards. From cowboy boots and hats to Western wear and souvenirs, you’ll find plenty of treasures to take home. Be sure to stop by Stockyards Station, an historic building housing a variety of shops and eateries. Whether you’re looking for a special gift or just browsing, the Stockyards offer a delightful shopping experience.

Savor the Flavor of Cowtown Winery

For a relaxing break, head over to Cowtown Winery for a wine tasing. Located in the heart of the Stockyards, this charming winery offers a selection of Texas wines in a cozy, rustic setting. Enjoy a flight of their best offerings, and don’t forget to try their signature wine slushies – perfect for a hot Texas day. It’s a great way to unwind and savor the flavors of the region.
