A Memorable Family Adventure: Hiking Bryce Canyon!

Bryce Canyon National Park, renowned for its otherworldly hoodoo formations and striking red rock landscapes, offers a memorable experience for families seeking both adventure and natural beauty. One of the park’s most captivating hikes is the trek into the Queens Garden, an exhilarating journey that provides a close-up view of Bryce’s unique geology.

To reach Bryce Canyon National Park, drive east from Cedar City on Highway 14 or south from I-70, following signs to the park entrance. The visitor center is your first stop, where you can gather maps, current trail conditions, and expert advice. The park is about a 1.5-hour drive from Cedar City, so plan accordingly.

The Hike

Starting from the main Bryce Canyon Visitor Center, head to the Sunset Point Trailhead to begin your adventure. The hike down into the Queens Garden is accessible via the Peek-a-boo Loop Trail. This descent into the canyon offers an awe-inspiring view of the park’s famed hoodoos—tall, thin spires of rock that have been shaped by centuries of erosion.

Tips for the Trek:

  1. Prepare for Altitude! Bryce Canyon sits at a high elevation (over 8,000 feet), which can make physical exertion more challenging. Take it slow and stay hydrated.
  2. Wear Appropriate Footwear: The terrain can be uneven and rocky. Sturdy hiking boots with good tread are essential.
  3. Bring Plenty of Water: Even on cooler days, it’s easy to get dehydrated. Aim for at least 2 liters of water per person.
  4. Sun Protection: The sun can be intense, so pack sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
  5. Start Early: To avoid crowds and enjoy cooler temperatures, start your hike early in the day.

Returning via Switchbacks:

After exploring the Queens Garden, the return involves a climb back up the switchbacks of Wallstreet. This ascent can be strenuous but is manageable with with breaks. Our kiddos were able to hike in and out on their own. The switchbacks offer spectacular views of the canyon as you climb, making the effort well worth it.

Bryce Canyon is incredible, but the most amazing views are from down below! The hike down and back is a rewarding family adventure that showcases Bryce Canyon’s stunning landscapes. With preparation and a spirit of adventure, your family will create lasting memories amid the park’s breathtaking scenery!
