Jasper, Arkansas: The Coolest Small Town You’ve Never Heard Of

Big Scenery, Small-Town Vibes: Welcome to Jasper

Tucked deep in the heart of the Ozarks, Jasper, Arkansas is one of those places that most people drive right past—unless they know. And let me tell you: once you know, you know.

With fewer than 500 residents and no traffic lights, Jasper might be tiny, but it packs in some of the best natural scenery in the South. It’s surrounded by mountains, rivers, and waterfalls—and it’s quiet. This is where you go when you want to get off the grid, breathe deep, and chase a little wonder.

Whether you’re planning a scenic road trip, a weekend of waterfall hikes, or just a peaceful place to slow down, Jasper is the hidden gem in Arkansas you didn’t know you were looking for.

🏞️ 1. Hike to Glory at Hawksbill Crag (Whitaker Point)

One of the most iconic (but still not overrun) views in the Ozarks is right here. The hike to Hawksbill Crag is 3 miles round-trip, with stunning views the whole way. And when you get to the crag? You’ll see why it’s one of the most photographed spots in Arkansas.

✔️ What to Expect:

  • Easy-to-moderate hike through forest
  • Epic cliff-side views
  • Best at sunrise or early morning

📍 Whitaker Point Trailhead (about 40 minutes from downtown Jasper)

🐃 2. Watch Wild Elk Roam in Boxley Valley

Yes—Arkansas has wild elk, and you can often spot them grazing just outside Jasper in Boxley Valley. Bring your camera and a zoom lens, especially in fall during rut season when the elk are most active.

✔️ What to Expect:

  • Elk herds visible at dawn and dusk
  • Scenic drive through Boxley historic district
  • Wildlife + fall foliage = perfection

📍 AR-43 & AR-21 near Ponca

🌊 3. Paddle the Upper Buffalo River

Jasper sits near the first national river in the U.S.—and the upper stretch of the Buffalo National River is ideal for kayaking, canoeing, or just floating along in a tube. With towering bluffs and emerald water, it’s one of the prettiest places you’ll ever dip a paddle.

✔️ What to Expect:

  • Rentals and shuttles available nearby
  • Best in spring or after heavy rain
  • Calm water, perfect for beginners

📍 Launch from Ponca or Steel Creek

🍔 4. Grab a Meal with a View at the Ozark Café

Open since 1909, Ozark Café is a Jasper institution. This little red diner serves up country-fried everything and pies worth writing home about. Sit by the window and take in the town square—or strike up a chat with a local who’s probably been coming here for decades.

✔️ What to Try:

  • Elk burger
  • Fried green tomatoes
  • Housemade pie of the day

🧗 5. Rock Climb (or Watch) at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch

Even if you don’t climb, it’s worth visiting Horseshoe Canyon Ranch, a privately-owned climbing and adventure resort just outside Jasper. It offers over 400 climbing routes, horseback riding, and even ziplining—and the views are next level.

✔️ What to Expect:

  • Day passes available
  • Gear rentals on-site
  • Epic photo ops, even from the parking lot

🌄 6. Catch the Sunset at Round Top Mountain

The Round Top Mountain Trail is a 4-mile loop with panoramic views and a touch of history—it was once a Civil War lookout point. Wildflowers bloom in spring, and the west-facing bluff makes for stunning sunset views.

✔️ What to Expect:

  • Dog-friendly
  • Great mix of forest, cliffs, and sky
  • Short steep climbs, but well worth it

📍 Trailhead near the south end of Jasper on AR-7

🛏️ 7. Stay in a Cozy Cabin with No One Around

Jasper has no chain hotels (thank goodness). What you will find: cabins tucked into the woods, riverside cottages, and cozy A-frames where your only neighbors are deer and birds.

✔️ Favorites to Check Out:

  • The Perch at Deer Lodge
  • Little Buffalo River Cabin
  • Cliff House Inn (great for sunrise views)

🍦 8. End the Day with Ice Cream and Stars

After a full day of hiking, paddling, or just taking it all in, there’s nothing better than a scoop of ice cream at Low Gap Café, followed by a blanket on the hood of your car and some of the darkest night skies in the state. No city lights. No noise. Just stars.

✔️ What to Expect:

  • Some of the best stargazing in Arkansas
  • Unplugged and unfiltered
  • The perfect end to a perfect day
