There’s something truly magical about watching your little ones’ faces light up at the first glimpse of holiday lights, and in Layton, Utah, Lights Before Christmas at Layton Commons Park has become our family’s go-to holiday event every year. It’s a tradition that brings festive joy, community spirit, and memories we’ll cherish forever.

Every holiday season, Layton Commons Park transforms into a sparkling winter wonderland filled with twinkling lights and festive displays. This beloved local event kicks off with a Holiday Lighting Ceremony, complete with performances by local elementary choirs and a joyful countdown to when the lights come on. It’s such a fun way to usher in the season together as a community.
One of the things I love most as a mom is that this event is completely free to enjoy, making it an easy and budget-friendly tradition for families. The light displays are open each evening from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve, usually from dusk until around 11 pm, so there are plenty of opportunities to bundle up and go after dinner on a weeknight or make it part of a weekend outing.

What makes it special for families:
What truly warms my heart most is watching my kids point out each glowing display, from shimmering trees to colorful light tunnels, and squeal with excitement. There’s nothing like seeing their eyes sparkle just as brightly as the lights themselves!
If you’re in north Utah this season and looking for a charming, family-friendly holiday tradition, make sure to visit Lights Before Christmas at Layton Commons Park. It’s a wonderful way to soak in the magic of the holidays, create lasting family memories, and share a few laughs (and maybe a peppermint or two) along the way.
