Last night, Salt Lake City’s Eccles Theater pulsed with nostalgia, warmth, and pure musical joy as The Neil Diamond Musical: A Beautiful Noise took the stage. More than a tribute concert, the production offered a layered look into the life and inner world of the iconic singer-songwriter; an experience that blended storytelling, memory, and, of course, beloved hits that had the audience singing along from the first familiar chord.

The musical’s book, written by Anthony McCarten, frames the story through therapy sessions with Neil later in life. Robert Westenberg brought a powerful, grounded presence as Neil (Now), playing him with a mix of vulnerability and restraint that made every reflective moment land. Opposite him, Lisa Renee Pitts as The Doctor delivered a compelling, steady performance, never overshadowing, always guiding the emotional rhythm of the scenes with warmth and empathy.
As the memories unfolded, Nick Fradiani stepped into the spotlight as Neil (Then), capturing Diamond’s evolution from shy songwriter to worldwide sensation. Fradiani’s vocals were undeniably one of the night’s highlights. They were rich, expressive, and filled with the kind of charisma that made it impossible not to smile when he launched into classics like “Sweet Caroline” or “Cracklin’ Rosie.”

The women in Neil’s life were portrayed with depth and personality, adding emotional texture to the story. Heidi Kettenring lit up the stage as Ellie Greenwich, the brilliant musician who championed Neil’s early career. Tiffany Tatreau offered a tender, relatable performance as Neil’s first wife, Jaye Posner, while Mary Page Nance brought intensity and charm to the role of Marcia Murphey, navigating both the passion and pressures of life with a rising star. She was absolutely incredible singing “Forever in Blue Jeans”.
Visually, A Beautiful Noise dazzled. The costumes shimmered with era-perfect detail, echoing Diamond’s signature style without slipping into parody. The sets shifted fluidly between therapy rooms, recording studios, and sold-out arenas, each transition punctuated by lighting and choreography that kept the energy high. And the music, written, of course, by Neil Diamond himself, was met with unmistakable love from the audience. Moments of participation weren’t just encouraged; they were inevitable. It felt like the entire theater was united in joy.

What elevated the show beyond a greatest-hits celebration was its message. Beneath the glitter and showmanship was a deeply human reminder: that we are all good enough as we are now. The musical’s emotional arc leaves you not just humming the melodies on the way out, but reflecting on the beauty of owning your story. Every triumph, every flaw, every version of yourself.
The Neil Diamond Musical: A Beautiful Noise is running now through January 25, 2026 in Salt Lake City at the Eccles Theatre. Don’t miss it!
