St. Augustine Alligator Farm: A Must-See Attraction

I had the opportunity recently to spend about a day in St. Augustine, Florida. We were passing through, and we stopped in St. Augustine to visit my uncle and aunt. Our main reason for visiting St. Augustine and most of our time spent there was with them, but when I go somewhere new, I also want to see what is so special about the area. One of those special, not-to-miss-places that we were introduced to is the St. Augustine Alligator Farm.

If you just had the same thought I originally did, which was “if you’ve seen one alligator, you’ve seen them all”, you’d be mistaken just like I was. Winding through the walkways, some of which have bridges right over the areas where the alligators are, I found it mesmerizing to just stand and watch them slowly swimming through the water and sunbathing on the banks. The sheer size of some of them was immensely impressive!

And the name is misleading because there is so much more to see than just alligators. While you will find crocodilians to be the primary focus (24 different species, to be exact), we were also amazed at the number of birds nesting in the trees directly above and surrounding the alligator and crocodile enclosures. We saw herons, vultures, parrots, spoonbills, and more. They even have a live webcam so you can watch the alligators and spoonbills HERE.

We spent about 2 hours exploring all there is to see at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm. In addition to the alligators, crocodiles, and various kinds of birds, we also enjoyed the other animals there: pythons, lemurs, sloths, tortoises, and komodo dragons. But my very favorite part was watching the alligator feeding. I highly recommend checking this out when you go. Not only was it fun to watch, but the staff member doing the feeding was so knowledgeable – we really learned a lot!

I now see why my aunt and uncle said that this is a “must-see” when in St. Augustine. We’re very thankful that the St. Augustine Alligator Farm hosted us for the afternoon. It really is a great place for all ages and should be included in your itinerary when you’re in the area.
