A Wild Day at Lake Tobias

Zoos are some of the most visited places for those with children. Everyone loves to see the exotic animals that can be found at the zoo and be able to see all the animals they’ve read about in books in real life! Lake Tobias is unlike any other zoo that I have visited. This zoo is located near central Pennsylvania in Halifax and it is a wildlife park that lets you get hands-on experience with many of the animals you love at a “traditional” zoo.

My family and I visited Lake Tobias and wanted to see and do all the things, so that’s just what we did! We started out by grabbing a map and heading out to see the giraffes! The kind people at the ticket booth let us know that the giraffe feeding was just about to start! I had never had the opportunity to pet or feed a giraffe so I was just as excited as my kids were. They have a reasonably priced booth where you can buy food to feed the giraffes. The giraffes were so friendly and we were all enthralled by their extremely long, purple tongues!

Note: you can only feed the animals food that is purchased at Lake Tobias! They regulate how much the animals eat and what they eat so be sure to only feed them “Lake Tobias approved” food!

Next we headed over to the safari, a must-do attraction at Lake Tobias. This is one of the things that sets it apart from the rest of the zoos out there. We were greeted by a curious emu in line that provided plenty of entertainment while waiting. The topless bus then carried us through the beautiful landscape where we saw buffalo, longhorns, llamas, and many other exotic animals. The best part was getting to feed and pet them as they came close; some even came up the stairs to get a special treat from the driver!

The zoo has many different animal exhibits throughout that you can see on your way from one attraction to another. Everything from lions, tigers, and zebras, to monkeys, porcupines, and peacocks! There is also a great petting zoo where you can visit barnyard animals. The reptile show is another must-do if you can work it into your time there. We loved seeing and learning about some interesting reptiles and we even got to pet an alligator!

One of the things that makes Lake Tobias a great place for families is that you can bring in your own food and drinks! This is a huge deal for those with picky eaters or who are looking to save a little money. They have wonderful picnic areas, including pavilions, where you can sit and enjoy your lunch while looking out over their beautiful pond. If you don’t want to bring along food you can enjoy very reasonably priced treats there as well.

Make sure you add Lake Tobias to your summer bucket list! It is such a unique experience, you will want to go back!
