Wild Adventures in West Virginia’s New River Gorge

If your idea of a good time involves helmets, harnesses, and heart-pounding moments, let me introduce you to your next great adventure: New River Gorge, West Virginia.

Tucked into the Appalachian Mountains and now officially a U.S. National Park, this area is full of big thrills in a totally wild, remote setting. No city lights. No theme parks. Just rugged cliffs, roaring rivers, and outdoor outfitters ready to launch you into the trees—or over a canyon.

Here are 7 high-adrenaline adventures you can have in and around Fayetteville, West Virginia, the unofficial adrenaline capital of Appalachia.

🌉 1. Walk Across the Catwalk of the New River Gorge Bridge

Yep, on the bridge. Not next to it. Not under it. On a 2-foot-wide catwalk 876 feet above the river. This guided experience gets you suited up in a harness and hooked to a safety line as you walk across one of the world’s longest single-span arch bridges. The views? Unreal. The drop? Also very real.

✔️ What to Expect:

  • 2-3 hour guided walk
  • 24″ wide grated walkway
  • Insanely cool photo ops

🚣 2. Whitewater Raft Class V Rapids on the Lower New River

This stretch of river is not for the faint of heart. With big rapids like “Double Z” and “Keeney Brothers,” the Lower New River delivers a wet, wild ride with cliff walls towering above and waves that will absolutely knock you around (in the best way).

✔️ What to Expect:

  • Half or full-day guided trips
  • Class III–V rapids
  • Best season: Spring and early summer

🌲 3. Zipline at Speeds Up to 60 MPH

This isn’t a short little ride through the trees. The Gravity Zipline Tour with Adventures on the Gorge includes multiple long-distance zips, one of which is over 3,000 feet long and flies you 200 feet above the forest floor. It’s like flying—only louder.

✔️ What to Expect:

  • 6 ziplines + 2 sky bridges
  • Max speeds of 60+ mph
  • Incredible views of the gorge

🧗 4. Rock Climb the Endless Wall

This isn’t just any climbing wall—Endless Wall is one of the most famous climbing areas in the country, with hundreds of routes on dramatic sandstone cliffs. Whether you’re a total beginner or an experienced climber, local guides can tailor a day that’s equal parts epic and safe.

  • Routes for all skill levels
  • Views that will literally take your breath away

🥾 7. Scramble Through Kaymoor Miners Trail

This is a hike, but it’s a grueling, sweat-inducing, quad-burning hike that drops 800+ vertical feet down into the gorge—and then back up again. With rusty mining ruins and moss-covered staircases, it’s Indiana Jones meets cardio.

✔️ What to Expect:

  • 821 steps (yes, we counted)
  • Waterfall views + historic structures
  • Bring water and good shoes
