101 Summer Fun Ideas: Create the Ultimate Summer Fun Jar

Summer has finally arrived!

The backpacks have been put away, the alarm clocks have been turned off, and the long, carefree days of summer stretch out ahead. It’s the season of sunshine, family vacations, neighborhood bike rides, backyard barbecues, and making memories together. But let’s be honest—it usually doesn’t take long before someone says those three little words every parent knows by heart: “I’m bored.” Instead of scrambling to come up with something to do, why not let the fun choose itself?

A Summer Fun Jar is a simple, creative way to keep your family inspired all season long. Fill a jar with activity cards, and whenever boredom strikes, let someone pull one at random. Maybe you’ll head out on a family adventure, get creative at home, cool off with a water activity, or brighten someone else’s day with an act of kindness. The surprise is part of the fun!

The best part? You can make the Summer Fun Jar completely your own. Add activities that fit your family’s interests, your schedule, and your budget. Whether you have just 20 minutes before dinner or an entire Saturday to explore, there’s always an adventure waiting inside.

How to Make Your Summer Fun Jar

Putting together your Summer Fun Jar is easy, and can even become an annual summer tradition for your family.

You’ll Need:

  • A mason jar, coffee can, basket, or other container
  • Colored paper or cardstock
  • Scissors
  • Markers, stickers, ribbon, or other decorations
  • Our free printable activity cards (optional)

Decorate your container however you’d like, then fill it with activity cards. Place it somewhere everyone in the family can easily reach.

The next time someone says, “I’m bored,” simply draw a card and let the adventure begin!

Understanding the Activity Icons

To help you quickly choose an activity that fits both your available time and your family’s interests, each activity includes two simple icons.

⏰ Time Needed

🟢 Quick Fun (15–30 minutes): Perfect for filling a little free time before dinner or bedtime.
🟡 An Hour or Less (30–60 minutes): Great for afternoons, evenings, or when you have a little extra time.
🟠 Half-Day Adventure (2–4 hours): Ideal for weekends or days when you have a few hours to explore.
🔵 Full-Day Adventure (4+ hours): Perfect for vacations, road trips, or making the most of an entire summer day.

Tip: Color-code your summer fun jar activities. Write or print each activity on coordinating colored cardstock based on how much time it takes. This makes choosing an activity even easier. If you only have an hour before dinner, simply pick a green or yellow card. If you’ve got a free Saturday with nothing planned, grab an orange or blue card and head out on a bigger adventure.

Make It Your Own

One of the best things about a Summer Fun Jar is that there’s no right or wrong way to do it.

Maybe your family loves camping, kayaking, miniature golf, baseball games, county fairs, or visiting grandparents. Maybe your kids have favorite playgrounds, ice cream shops, or hiking trails. Add those activities to your jar! You can even create cards for birthdays, special celebrations, or rainy-day traditions.

Another fun idea is to let each family member contribute five to ten personalized activity cards. Kids love seeing their own ideas mixed into the jar, and you’ll probably discover a few new family favorites along the way.

Remember, this isn’t about filling every minute of your summer with activities. It’s about making it easier to say “Yes!” to spending time together instead of hearing, “There’s nothing to do.”

The best summer memories are rarely the most expensive ones—they’re the moments spent laughing together, trying something new, and simply enjoying each other’s company.
