- CLOSE LIST -
There are likely many tourist attractions that may have you wanting to take a trip to South Dakota, and no doubt Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial and Badlands National Park may be on your list. But I highly encourage you to take a trip to the other side of the state to see The World’s Only Corn Palace, too.
Located in the city of Mitchell, South Dakota, about an hour west of Sioux Falls, you will find people who love their corn. The high school mascot is Cornelius the Kernel, and the biggest attraction is The World’s Only Corn Palace.
Using 12 natural colors of cultivated corn, students enrolled in Digital Media and Design courses at Dakota Wesleyan University work on the mural, which has a different theme each year. Some past mural themes include Dutch Scenes (1914), South Dakota History (1951), Modes of Transportation (1958), Mother Goose Rhymes (1971), and Everyday Heroes (2008).
When visiting The World’s Only Corn Palace, you’ll happily find there is no admission fee to enter. Inside, you will learn about the palace’s history and find many interactive displays, perfect for kids and families. There is a gift shop located across the street where you will find tons of corn-related merchandise and souvenirs.
