Some of the best DIY projects aren’t just decorations—they tell a story.
This creative Scrabble board art project transforms a classic board game into a personalized piece of home décor that celebrates the people, places, memories, and moments that matter most. Whether you create one centered around your family like I did, or a favorite vacation, your pets, a hobby, or even a special life event, the result is a one-of-a-kind keepsake that sparks conversation every time someone sees it.
Unlike many DIY crafts that end up stored away after they’re finished, this is a project you’ll proudly display for years. It combines creativity, storytelling, and problem-solving as you work to connect words together in a way that reflects your unique story.
The board can be as simple or elaborate as you’d like:
You can even create multiple boards over time to capture different chapters of life.
Include family member names, pets, hometowns, favorite activities, traditions, and meaningful words that describe your family. This is what I chose to make, because I want it to hang in our sunroom, a place where we spend a lot of time together as a family reading, watching TV, playing with our dog, and playing games.
Before even touching the board, create a list of words that fit your chosen theme.
For a family board, write down:
Aim for 15–30 words depending on the size of your board.
This is often the most time-consuming—and most enjoyable—part.
Start with your most important word in the center. For me, that word was FAMILY. Then gradually connect additional words using shared letters, just as you would during a game of Scrabble.
Tips:
The goal isn’t a high score—it’s telling your story.
When you’re completely happy with the layout:
Allow the board to dry completely before moving it.

Accidentally glued a tile in the wrong spot? It happens! Rather than trying to remove it immediately while the glue is still wet, allow the glue to fully set first. Once it’s dry, carefully slide a butter knife underneath the tile and gently lift upward. In most cases, the tile will pop right off without damaging the board or leaving a noticeable mark.
Just take your time and work slowly. If you force the tile too quickly, you could tear the paper surface of the board underneath. A little patience goes a long way and can save you from having to start over.
There are several ways to display your finished artwork:
Because every word has meaning, guests will naturally be drawn to it and ask about the stories behind it.
One of the best parts of this craft is that everyone can contribute.
Ask each family member:
The finished board becomes more than décor—it becomes a snapshot of your family’s story at this moment in time. Years from now, you’ll look at those words and remember exactly what mattered most. And that’s what makes this project so special.
