Supplies You’ll Need

• Hot glue gun & glue sticks

Step 1: Brainstorm Your Words

Before even touching the board, create a list of words that fit your chosen theme.

For a family board, write down:

• Names
• Pets
• Places
• Traditions
• Hobbies
• Descriptive words

Aim for 15–30 words depending on the size of your board.

Step 2: Build the Puzzle

This is often the most time-consuming—and most enjoyable—part.

Start with your most important word in the center. For me, that word was FAMILY. Then gradually connect additional words using shared letters, just as you would during a game of Scrabble.

Tips:

• Use shorter words to bridge larger words.
• Rearrange frequently.
• Take photos as you work so you can remember layouts you like.
• Don’t be afraid to start over several times.

The goal isn’t a high score—it’s telling your story.

Step 3: Glue Everything Down

When you’re completely happy with the layout:

1. Carefully remove one tile at a time.
2. Add a small amount of glue.
3. Replace the tile.
4. Continue until all tiles are secured.

Allow the board to dry completely before moving it.

Helpful Tip: Don’t Panic if You Make a Mistake

Accidentally glued a tile in the wrong spot? It happens! Rather than trying to remove it immediately while the glue is still wet, allow the glue to fully set first. Once it’s dry, carefully slide a butter knife underneath the tile and gently lift upward. In most cases, the tile will pop right off without damaging the board or leaving a noticeable mark.

Just take your time and work slowly. If you force the tile too quickly, you could tear the paper surface of the board underneath. A little patience goes a long way and can save you from having to start over.

Step 4: Display Your Creation

There are several ways to display your finished artwork:

• Lean it on a shelf
• Hang it on a wall
• Place it in a shadow box
• Use it as part of a gallery wall
• Display it in a family room, office, or game room

Because every word has meaning, guests will naturally be drawn to it and ask about the stories behind it.
