If you’re on the hunt for a family-friendly hike that’s big on fun and low on stress, look no further than Red Hollow Slot Canyon in Orderville, Utah. As a mom who is always on the lookout for exciting outdoor activities for my little ones, this hidden gem ticked all the boxes for a memorable adventure. It was also a great place to stop to stretch our legs on our way home from Kanab.

The trailhead starts at the water facilities in Orderville. Continue for a few yards, and you will see some beautiful horses. Keep walking along the sandy wash until you get to the slot canyon.

Now, onto the fun part—the slot canyon itself! As you hit the canyon, you’ll be greeted by stunning views of the red rock landscape. Trust me, it’s like something on a postcard! The trail itself is pretty easy-going, making it perfect for little legs. There were some rocks to climb over, but that just made it all the more fun for my littles. Remember to pack plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen – the Utah sun can be a sneaky one, especially in those narrow canyons!

As you make your way into the canyon, get ready to be wowed. The towering sandstone walls rise up on either side, creating a natural playground just waiting to be explored.

Here is where the real adventure begins. As you venture into the canyon, you’ll encounter some fun obstacles that’ll put your agility to the test. Think narrow passages to squeeze through and smooth rock surfaces to scramble over. But fear not, fellow adventurers – even the little ones can tackle these challenges with a bit of encouragement and a helping hand!

As you explore deeper into the canyon, you’ll stumble upon what looks like a dead end, but it actually goes up. There is a rope hanging down that will allow you to climb up. This is a good turning around point if you have little ones because it is a difficult climb. My husband and I took turns going up with our two older kids, but didn’t have a safe way to get our youngest up. You really to have to hold on tight to the rope and scramble up. With the two kids we did have climb it, we had an adult at the top to help them over the final rock and an adult at the bottom to boost them up. This isn’t something I would have had any of my kids attempt without an adult at both ends – and the previous rock climbing experience that they had was extremely helpful. Teenagers and adults should do fine.

Once you are over the rock at the top, you will continue through additional slot canyons.
